A while back, I received an email from a mother saying
“Thank you for the wonderful family session! You helped us remember how much we love being together and how much fun we have when we are together!”
This comment changed my perspective on family sessions from one of taking portraits, to one of enjoying portraits. Like any mother, I want pictures of my children’s eyes, open and looking at me but you know what I want even more…their real honest and genuine smile!
To get that, I have changed the structure of my sessions to focus entirely on the experience. We play, we laugh, we dance, we tickle, we thoughtfully pose and more importantly we unpose. This gives us a chance to find some real spontaneity and unearth raw emotion. For this family, their experience was an outing in the Boston Public Garden, with a small bag of cheerios and a duck pond! I just love how these images came out!
